The term pesantren is basically a traditional Islamic education workshop in which there is also still a dormitory for students or students. In other terms, students live along with & learn the knowledge of belief under the guidance of a teacher known as kiai.

Usually the establishment of a boarding school starts from a kyai or cleric of Islamic faith who settles somewhere. Then, there came the students who wanted to learn various religious knowledge to him.

It is not uncommon for students who want to learn to come from distant regions. For this reason, then a place to live the students was also built around the kiai residence earlier. The more students who want to study, the more cottages will be built.

In the past, porto life & education at pesantren was provided along with the students with the support of the surrounding community. This method is intended so that life in pesantren is not affected using the turmoil that is found outside.

The forerunner of the birth of the Islamic boarding school is thought to be when Sheikh Maulana Malik Ibrahim or better known as Sunan Ampel, established a padepokan in Ampel, Surabaya, East Java. Although at that time it was not considered a pesantren, it can be said that what Sunan Ampel did became the foundation of pesantren education in Indonesia.

Students who have learned and relative knowledge in the padepokan Sunan Ampel. Then one by one went back to their respective territories and put their knowledge into practice there. So the students of Sunan Ampel, established a padepokan for example what they had obtained at Padepokan Ampel. Many grand scholars were born based on the padepokans earlier.

Launching from the tebuireng.online page, in 1899 Kiai Hasyim Asy'ari founded the Tebuireng Islamic boarding school in Jombang, then built Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) which is now the largest Islamic organization in Indonesia. On the other hand, a colleague of Kiai Hashim's teachers in Mecca, Kiai Ahmad Dahlan, the founder of Muhammadiyah, founded a more modern Islamic education center, using a slightly different curriculum.

Now, along with the times, pesantren are increasingly modern, both from the curriculum and the fisk of the building. Even so, the simplicity & sincerity described by the life of the kyai and his students, is still an exemplary primary value based on the teachings of life in pesantren.
