Rizem Azid writes in the book Sejarah Islam Nusantara , that Sunan Gresik is also known by the nickname Sheikh Maghribi or Maulana Maghribi. Other nicknames are Sunan Tandhes, Sunan Raja Wali, Wali Quthub, Mursyidur Aulia' Wali Sanga, Sayyidul Auliya Wali Sanga, Ki Ageng Bantal, and Maulana Makhdum Ibrahim I.
Because he was considered the first wali to come to Java, Sunan Gresik was seen as the most senior wali of the other walisongo. According to oral sources and folklore, he came to the archipelago and began to spread Islam by establishing a mosque in Pasucinan Village, Manyak District.

Sunan Gresik has lived in Campa for 13 years. There, he married the king's daughter who gave him two sons, namely Raden Rahmad or Sunan Ampel and Ali Murtadha, commonly known as Raden Santri.

The creed and schools of fiqh he adheres to are Ahlussunnah wal Jamaah Islam and are based on the Shafi'i school of fiqh. During the spread of Islam, Sunan Gresik was a murshid of 9 mu'tabarah walisongo congregations, namely the 'Alawiyah, Qadiriyah, Naqsyabandiyah, Syadziliyah, Sanusiyah, Maulawiyah congregations, Nur Muhammadiyah, Khidiriyah, and Al-Ahadiyah.
Sunan Gresik continued to preach in Gresik until the end of his life, namely in 1419 AD. He died on Monday, 12 Rabiul Awal 822 AD which coincided with April 8th. Currently, Sunan Gresik's tomb is located in Gapura Village, Gresik, East Java.
