The 49th Syarah of Wisdom – Syarah al-Hikam

 49th WISDOM OF WISDOM

مَا بَسَقَتْ أَغْصَانُ ذُلٍّ إِلَّا عَلَى بِذْرِ طَمَعٍ.

" The branches of humiliation will not grow except from the seed of covetousness. ”

Greed is the worst thing that can damage the 'ubūdiyyah . Greed is the source of various kinds of trials of the heart. Because the greedy person only wants to rely on makhlūq. The reason for the occurrence of greed is doubting or doubting taqdr and there is no doubt that the greedy person has a corrupted religion.

The opposite of covetousness is wara' , which is the heart's belief in Allah's destiny and surrender and leaning on Him, his heart is at peace with Him.

This 49th wisdom is actually a continuation of the previous explanation of wisdom

In the 48th Wisdom, it has been explained that one of the signs of the death of the heart is the absence of feelings of regret when committing a sin. Now it is continued that even though we are encouraged to regret when we commit a sin, do not necessarily make this attitude continue to dominate us so that it results in despair and negative thinking / prejudice to God.

When we sin or neglect to fulfill our obligations, we are encouraged to regret and rise up to correct the negligence. Not continue to regret and make us forget the magnitude of forgiveness that God has. If you're just sorry, it's clearly wrong.

The reality is that sometimes there are some people who sin, then regret it until they despair at the magnitude of the forgiveness that Allah has. Satan sometimes whispers to him that if he has committed a major sin, then his act of worship is useless.

If the devil's whispers are obeyed, the feeling of regret due to sin does not necessarily make him rise to do good. Therefore, kalam of wisdom 48 must be understood according to its context by studying this word of wisdom 49.

That it's good to regret when you commit a sin/don't carry out your obligations, but you have to get up to fix it, not keep lamenting about it. How big and how many sins we commit, the forgiveness and mercy that Allah has is far greater than all of that.

Regret from sinning does not necessarily make you sink in regret forever, but on the contrary, rise up and correct mistakes. If asked. How is it possible that on the one hand we are commanded to regret when we sin, but on the other hand we are ordered to be husnud-dzan?

So here it is necessary to explain in detail, that the command to repent of sin is solely out of shame to Allah. Shame because God has treated us well, but how come we disobey him by sinning. This is so embarassing. Regret for sin is purely because of the shame factor to Him. Not because of fear of punishment/threat of hell from Allah. If regret commits a sin because it is based on fear of punishment/hell, then it is actually an ego. The ego is selfish. Regarding heaven/hell, torment/blessings, those are purely Allah's prerogatives. Humans have no power.

If you regret your sin because you are afraid of hell, then the potential for prejudice to Allah is higher. However, if we regret our sins because we are ashamed of God, we can still keep our minds on Him.

So it needs to be reaffirmed that when we sin / neglect our obligations, our attitude is to regret all of those actions. Then rise up to correct all the mistakes by continuing to believe and think that Allah's forgiveness is far greater.

This is a proportional attitude. Don't mean that the sin that has been committed will make him regret it, but it doesn't make him rise from adversity. People who know the attributes of Allah with a good understanding will realize that His mercy and forgiveness far exceeds the nature of his wrath.
