Profile of the Buntet Islamic Boarding School

This Islamic boarding school was founded by Kiai Muqayim in 1758 (18th century). At first, Kiai Muqayim opened recitation of the basics of the Koran for the community in Dawuan Sela Village (the location of the Buntet Islamic Boarding School since the 1750s). The place where the recitation takes place is a stage of thatch bamboo booths in which there are several bedrooms or huts whose walls are made of bamboo and the roof is made of thatch trees. 

Currently, the location of the Buntet Islamic Boarding School is in the Sweet Depok Islamic Boarding School, Mertapada Kulon Village, Astanajapura District, Cirebon Regency. The location of the Buntet Islamic Boarding School can be categorized as a strategic place and very easy to reach by using any type of vehicle, both motorbikes and cars.

The Buntet Islamic Boarding School for three decades (1946-1979) has undergone very rapid changes and reforms, followed by the establishment of MTs Muallimin and Muallimat, and finally MA which later changed its status to MAN. This fact shows that the kiai and the supervisors of the Buntet Islamic Boarding School are always trying to improve and think about forms and types of education that are in accordance with the wishes and developments of the times.

One of the efforts made by the manager of the Buntet Islamic Boarding School so that all assets and activities that have taken place continue to run but are able to keep up with the times, is to establish an organized forum which is expected to be able to become a mediator between the pesantren and the community or the government. The forum in question is the Islamic Education Foundation (YPI) which was established on June 29, 1992 with Notarial Deed no. 71.

Through YPI, all forms of educational activities (school and out of school), community, and Islamic boarding schools are formally protected because all existing programs and activities are always based on the planning and agreement of the foundation management. In this foundation, it is also stipulated that all educational activities are held through the Islamic Education Institute (LPI). Thus, at the Buntet Islamic Boarding School there are two education organizing bodies, namely YPI and LPI. YPI's programs are universal, while LPI's programs are internal.

One of YPI's tasks is to manage and organize formal and non-formal education. The reason is, one of the systems built in this pesantren is for students who are staying at the Buntet Islamic Boarding School, they are required to complete formal education as mandated by the National Education Law, according to their educational age. 

Santri must attend formal education levels such as elementary, junior high, high school, to university if they are able. In addition, they are also required to attend non-formal education (dirosah diniyyah) which is held in each dormitory, or to attend special education held by kyai according to their specialization in knowledge.

As stated above, the education held at the Buntet Islamic Boarding School covers kindergarten to university. In detail, the following levels of education contained in this institution.
