The Darussalam Islamic Boarding School then became a reference for the development of other pesantren which were later established in the province.
KH's decision. Djamaluddin to establish a pesantren based on the spirit in the context of developing the Islamic religion in the South Kalimantan region. In addition, this area is known to have a very strong religious tradition. In fact, a number of prominent Indonesian ulama came from this area. Therefore, KH. Djamaluddin later saw that pesantren was one of the best efforts at that time to develop Islam, especially in his area. After he died, he was replaced by KH. Hassan Ahmad.
Islamic Boarding School Development
At the beginning of its establishment, the Darussalam Islamic boarding school appeared with a traditional teaching system. The materials taught are limited only in the religious field. Likewise, the pesantren building is still very simple, only for religious teaching by means of halaqah, where students sit cross-legged around the teacher while listening to the religious material given.
The development of the Darussalam pesantren experienced a big leap when the pesantren was led by KH. Kasyful Anwar, he replaced KH. Hassan Ahmad. He was the leader of the pesantren from 1922 to 1940. During that period, a number of reforms were made in order to improve the education of the pesantren. He renovated the old building and replaced it with a new high-rise building. The building has sixteen locales, which are used both as study rooms and offices.
In addition, the most important aspect of the reforms carried out by KH. Kasyful Anwar is introducing the classical / madrasa system to the traditional education system with a tiered class system. Starting from Tahdiriyah for 3 years, Ibtidaiyah for 3 years, and Tsanawiyah for 3 years.
KH. Kaysful Anwar also reformed the curriculum aspect. He no longer limits pesantren education to Islamic religious subjects, but also includes general subjects in the curriculum that applies to pesantren.
The modernization of the Darussalam Islamic boarding school continues in line with the development of the surrounding community. The community's need for increasingly diverse education – which is not only limited to the field of religion – has always received great attention from the management of Darussalam pesantren in the next period. Therefore, currently the Darussalam Islamic Boarding School does not only establish Islamic educational institutions, but also general educational institutions. The Islamic boarding school located in Martapura also has a junior high school, an SPP (School of Agriculture) which uses the curriculum from the Ministry of Agriculture, and an STM which refers to the Ministry of National Education. In fact, Islamic boarding schools also established Islamic High Schools combined with the pesantren system.
