For the sake of maintaining the trust, this young man pays debts through a piece of wood
Abu Hurairah once narrated a hadith about a young man from the Children of Israel. Because he was in need of money, this young man intended to borrow a thousand dinars from his friend. He also visited his friend and expressed the intent and purpose.
His friend is willing to lend the money on condition that witnesses are brought in during the debt transaction. But the young man said, "Allah is sufficient as a witness for me".
"Okay, but I need a guarantor who can guarantee your debt," asked the friend.
"Allah is sufficient as my guarantor," replied the young man.
Hearing this, his friend agreed and gave a loan of 1,000 dinars to the young man. The young man promised to pay his debt in accordance with the agreed time.
After some time, the young man traveled to another island in a ship. After living on the island for a long time, it didn't feel like the due date for paying his debt to his friend was almost here. The young man rushed to the dock to look for a ship because he had promised to pay his debt in the allotted time. However, there is no ship to the island where he lives.
The young man continued to wait and arrived at the due date of payment of his debt. On that day there was not a single ship that could take him home. Finally the young man took a piece of wood and made a hole in it. He slipped a thousand dinars along with a letter addressed to his friend into the wood. The young man then threw the wood into the sea.
Before drifting away, the young man prayed, “O Allah, you already know that I borrowed my friend's money as much as 1000 dinars. My friend asked for a witness, but I said that you are enough to be my witness, he was willing. Then he asked me for a guarantor, then I said that it was enough for you to be my guarantor. And he was ready. Really I have tried hard to find a ship to return to my hometown and pay my debts. But I did not find a single ship to return home. Therefore, I entrust this money to you.”
The young man threw the wood into the sea.
Elsewhere, in his hometown, it turns out that his friend is waiting at the dock. His friend hoped that the young man would come to pay the debt. But the ship he was waiting for never arrived. While waiting for the ship at the dock, his friend collected wood for fuel. The friend accidentally saw the wood floating on the beach. He picked it up and brought it home.
Arriving at the house, his friend split the wood that he had collected on the beach. How surprised he was when he found a thousand Dinars and a letter in a wood. He was very happy to know that the letter and money came from a friend who used to borrow money.
Some time passed, the young man finally found a ship to return to his hometown. Arriving at the dock, the young man immediately rushed to his friend's house to pay his debt. The young man apologized for the delay.
After meeting his friend, the young man said, "By Allah, I have been trying to find a ship to go home and pay my debt to you, but I did not find a single ship. It was only today that I found the ship that brought me here.”
"Didn't you send the money you borrowed through a piece of wood," said his friend while explaining what really happened.
"Indeed Allah has fulfilled what you sent me through a piece of wood," continued the friend.
From the story we see how hard the young man tried to keep his trust and promise. If someone makes a promise, then he must fulfill his promise. Because all promises will be accounted for to Allah. It is this kind of trust that is becoming rare nowadays.
Hopefully the story will always remind us to always be honest and keep the trust . Allah will help and facilitate the affairs of His servants who believe and keep the trust. (AN)
