Karamah Shaykh Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi: Can Talk to the Ocean

Karamah Shaykh Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi: Can Talk to the Ocean

Karomah is a privilege granted by Allah SWT to His guardians. Like miracles, karomah is something extraordinary that is difficult for human reason to accept. It's just that miracles are only reserved for the Prophets.

Karomah is a privilege granted by Allah SWT to His guardians. Like miracles, karomah is something extraordinary that is difficult for human reason to accept. It's just that miracles are only reserved for the Prophets.

There is a story that tells about the karomah of one of the students of Sheikh Abu al-Hasan as-Syadzili (d. 656 H) whose name was Sheikh Abu al-'Abbas al-Mursi (d. 685 H). This story was quoted by Sheikh Ma'mun Gharib in his work entitled  Abu al-Hasan al-Syadzili: Hayatuhu wa Tashawwufuhu wa Talamidzuhu wa Awraduhu (pp. 100-101).

At that time, Sheikh Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi together with Sheikh Abu al-Hasan as-Syadzili and his followers were about to go on a pilgrimage. Arriving in an area called Akhmim, as-Syadzili told al-Mursi about his dream last night.

As-Syadzili related that in a dream he was in a crowd, and at that time he was in the middle of the sea (on a ship). The wind was blowing very hard, the waves in the ocean were rolling, it made the ship as-Syadzili boarded leak. He finally went to the edge of the ship and said:

" O ocean, if you are commanded to listen and obey me, then all the blessings belong to God. However, if not, then all decisions belong to God. "

And the sea answered: "Obey! Obey!”

After telling his dream, as-Syadzili made a will to al-Mursi that he continue his journey, whatever happens later. As-Syadzili also reported that there would be a 'miracle' (re: karomah). When the group arrived in an area called Humaitsara, as-Syadzili fell ill and died. He was buried there too.

According to the will given by his teacher to him, Sheikh al-Mursi and his entourage continued their journey. While crossing the red sea, al-Mursi and his entourage along with other ship passengers were threatened with safety, because strong winds came and were followed by large rolling waves, the ship they were traveling in also experienced a leak.

At that time, al-Mursi forgot the dream his teacher had told him. When the ship's passengers were threatened with sinking and the situation became more and more complicated, al-Mursi remembered the dream he had told him, and finally he put into practice what as-Syadzili did in his dream. He repeated what as-Syadzili said:

" O ocean, if you are commanded to listen and obey me, then all the blessings belong to God. However, if not, then all decisions belong to God. "

And, the 'miracle' reported by as-Syadzili took place, al-Mursi heard the 'answer' from the ocean: “Obey! Obey!” Shortly after al-Mursi put this into practice, the weather suddenly turned more friendly and the sea calmed down again. All the passengers on the ship, including al-Mursi and his entourage, finally continued their journey smoothly and safely.

That is one of the stories about the karamah owned by Sheikh Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi. What is certain is that the karomah that happened to the saints happened solely to glorify them, and all that happened was by Allah's permission alone. Wallahu a'lam .
