Even at independence events, the Lirboyo Islamic Boarding School always took part in the movement of the struggle by sending its students to the battlefield such as the Battle of November 10, 1945 in Surabaya. [2]

History

Lirboyo Islamic Boarding School was founded by KH. Abdul Karim who originally resided in Lirboyo Village in 1910 AD Before settling in Lirboyo Village, he taught at the Tebuireng Islamic Boarding School under the care of KH. Hasyim Asy'ari who also became a peer when he studied at Syaikhona Kholil Bangkalan , then KH. Abdul Karim married Nyai Khodijah bint KH. Sholeh, Banjarmelati. Since that marriage KH. Abdul Karim lives in Lirboyo Village, Kediri. The transfer of KH. Abdul Karim from Tebuireng to Lirboyo Village was caused by the encouragement of his father-in-law (KH. Sholeh Banjarmelati) in the hope that the syiar and da'wah of Islam would become wider. [3]

Then on the desire and initiative of KH. Abdul Karim, with the support of his father-in-law, KH. Abdul Karim founded a hut to teach and spread the teachings of Islam to anyone who wants to seek knowledge. The first student of KH. Abdul Karim named Umar from Madiun, then came another student named Yusuf, Sahil, and Somad from Magelang., then also came from Gurah, Kediri named Syamsudin. Day by day and over the years, the Lirboyo Islamic Boarding School has more and more students and is starting to be known by residents both in Kediri and from outside Kediri. [4]

Then three years after the establishment of the lodge, then in 1913, KH. Abdul Karim built a mosque within the area of the cottage with the aim of teaching religion and especially as a means of worship. Until now the mosque still exists with the name Lawang Songo Mosque, because the number of gates (doors) of the mosque is nine. [5]

Until now, the existence of the Lirboyo Islamic Boarding School has grown rapidly to become the center of classical Islamic studies in the style of a pesantren which is more than a century old. In the historical events of Indonesia, the Lirboyo Islamic Boarding School always took part and played an active role in the movement of the struggle by sending its students to the battlefield such as the events of the Battle of November 10, 1945 in Surabaya. [6]

As one of the centers of Islamic religious education, Pesantren Lirboyo always produces cadres of religious and national generations who are qualified in various fields in religious disciplines. In addition, Lirboyo Islamic Boarding School also adheres to salaf (traditional) education by harmonizing cultures that are able to fill modernization, and it has been proven that Lirboyo Islamic Boarding School has produced many pious figures in the religious field, as well as pious in the intellectual field.
