Mahfudzot Class 2 KMI Gontor and its Meaning and Explanation (Part 4)

قَالَ الْإِمَامُ الشَّافِعِيُّ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ

Has said Imam Shafi'i Radiyallahu Anhu

**************************

شَكَوْتُ إِلَى وَكِيْعٍ سُوْءَ حِفْظِيْ # فَأَرْشَدَنِيْ إِلَى تَرْكِ الْمَعَاصِيْ

I have complained to Waki' my weak memorization,

So he also guided me to leave immorality.

وَأَخْبَرَنِيْ بِأَنَّ الْعِلْمَ نُوْرٌ # وَنُوْرُ اللهِ لَا يُهْدَى لِعَاصِيْ

He also told me that knowledge is light ,

And the light of Allah is not given to the sinners.

Syarah / Explanation and Conclusion:

Here it is said that Imam Shafi'i rahimahullahnever felt the weakness of the ability to memorize, so he also complained about the difficulty to his teacher, namely Imam Waki '. So his teacher also advised him to avoid immorality. It should be understood here that a scholar like him would certainly not commit 'immorality' in the sense that we understand. Because in the view of scholars at their level, a small sin that might be considered 'ordinary' in the general view is felt as a big sin which they deeply regret. According to some narrations, the 'immorality' referred to by Imam Shafi'i here is that he one day 'accidentally' saw the calf of a woman whose clothes were exposed by the wind. Thus they are scholars who are extraordinary in guarding themselves from sin.

Then we also need to underline that 'weak memorization' in the view of great scholars like them is not the same as 'weak memorization' in the view of ordinary people like us. Because we all know that Imam Shafi'i is the Imam of the school of thought who reached the level of ' Mujtahid Muthlaq ' who memorized hundreds of thousands of hadiths. But even so, he still felt that his memorization was not as good as he expected. This is nothing but proof of his humility or humility in front of the teacher. The lessons we need to take from Imam Shafi'i are:

1. Never feel ujub or amazed at the knowledge that we currently have, for example they are great scholars who always feel lack of knowledge.

2. Sin and immorality are light that is not given by God to sinners, so let us avoid sin and immorality in seeking knowledge. Wallahu A'lam.
