The Salafiyah Syafi'iyah Islamic Boarding School Sukorejo Situbondo is one of the largest Islamic boarding schools in East Java. This Islamic boarding school was founded by Kyai Syamsul Arifin in 1908. This boarding school is 34 KM (50 minutes) from the direction of Situbondo Regency and 55 KM (1 hour, 13 minutes) from the Ketapang port of Banyuwangi. In addition to teaching the sciences of classical books, in 1978 a Junior High School was opened, the Ibrahimy Islamic Institute (now Ibrahimy University) was opened in 1968 and Ma'had Aly was opened in 1990 as an effort to overcome the scarcity of Fiqh experts. On 18-20 December 2018, this Islamic boarding school made history for the first time hosting the Literature Conference which was opened by the Minister of Religion of the Republic of Indonesia ,Lukman Hakim Syaifuddin .

A Brief History 

Kiai Syamsul Arifin with his son, As'ad and several accompanying students from Madura, in 1328 H / 1908 AD, cleared and penetrated the forest of Sukorejo hamlet, Sumberejo village, Banyuputih sub-district, Situbondo district to establish a pesantren and a village. [1] Since 1914, the pesantren has developed along with the arrival of students from the area around Besuki Residency. That year was also later designated as the year the Salafiyah Syafiiyah Islamic Boarding School was founded.

During the struggle for independence, the Sukorejo Islamic Boarding School was not only a learning center, but also a center for the struggle for independence. Many fighters were accommodated in Islamic boarding schools, as well as the headquarters for formulating strategies against the invaders. This was confirmed by the coronation of KHR. As'ad Syamsul Arifin was named a National Hero. [2]

The learning process in the early days of pesantren was carried out through the sorogan and bandongan system, until then Kiai As'ad in 1928 introduced and developed a classical learning system with the establishment of various educational institutions, such as Madrasah Ibtidaiyah, Tsanawiyah, Aliyah, SD, SLTP, SLTA to tertiary institutions. .

In an effort to contribute to education according to the needs of the times, various vocational and expertise educational institutions were established, such as the Vocational High School (SMK), the Ma'had Aly Fiqh Expert Cadre Institute and the Madrasatul Qur'an as an institution for the study and deepening of Al-Qur'an sciences. Qur'an. Informal institutions such as courses and training have also colored its development. [3]

Islamic Boarding School Activities 

1. Tahajjud prayer

This activity must be followed by all students and starts at 03.15 WIB. At this time all the students were awakened from sleep. After performing ablution, all students must perform the Tahajud prayer

2. Prayer in congregation

All students and umanas (administrators) perform the maktubah prayers in congregation which are held at the Jami Mosque and the Ibrahimy Mushalla

3. Reciting the Qur'an

It is carried out in the morning after the dawn and maghrib prayers in each room led by the chairman of the room.

4. Reading Nadham

This activity is carried out in each class according to the level of education under the supervision of the administrator of the educational institution.

5. Yellow Book Study

Bandongan recitation of the yellow book is carried out after Dhuhur, Maghrib and Isha'. This study is attended by students who are able to read the Qur'an.

6. Muthala'ah Clock

Study hours or muthala'ah are held from 20.00 to 22.00 WIB.

7. Activities of al-Barqi

This activity is intended for students who are still not fluent in reading the Qur'an

8. Prayer Qiyamul Lail

This prayer is carried out by students based on the room area at 11 o'clock.

9. Reciting Burdah Roving

This activity is carried out after other qiyamul activities, which are followed by the students on duty based on the room area.

10. Recitation of Zanji, Shalawat Badr & Istiqasah

Barzanji reading activities are carried out on Friday nights, while the Badr and Istiqasah prayers are held on Tuesday nights.

11. Madrasa meeting

On Tuesday and Friday evenings, class meetings are held based on education level
