Scholar's Story: His books were not managed and were sold to pay off family debts
Sayyid Murtadlo Z a bidi; Author of Syarah Ihya' (d. 1205 H): His books were not managed after his wife remarried
Who does not know the book of Ihya' Ulumuddin ? But not many people know, it turns out that the Ihya book which is so thick is still dis syrahi (commented upon) by other scholars. One of the scholars who gave lectures on Kitab Ihya' Ulumuddin was Sayyid Murtadlo Zabidi.
Sayyid Murtadlo Zabidi is an Indian-born scholar who traveled the continent. Nisbat Zabidi in his name is actually a city in Yemen where he lived for a long time. But he eventually settled in Egypt and died there,
Sheikh Murtadlo Zabidi is very fond of collecting books. He also has a private library whose collection can be said to be quite complete. Even in the records of Ibnul Kattani, the most influential library in Egypt in the late 12th and early 13th centuries Hijriah belonged to Sheikh Murtadlo Zabidi.
One of his students, Ibnu Abdissalam an-Nashiri, once witnessed the greatness of his love for collecting thousands of books.
And I have not seen the collection of thousands of thousands of collections of books in every art, especially hadith, interpretation, language, and arts of literature, as our Sheikh al-Murtada collected in Egypt.
"I have never found a person who has collected millions of poems from various disciplines, be it hadith, the language of literature, as my teacher Sheikh Murtadlo Zabidi has collected."
However, after the death of Sheikh Murtadlo Zabidi, the book collection was not well maintained. In fact most of it has been lost. When Ibn Abdissalam returned from his second pilgrimage, he wanted to stop by Egypt, to visit his teacher's library. It turned out that what he saw was far from the situation during his teacher's life.
The books in the library have been scattered. Scattered carried by many people without being returned. His wife then remarried to someone who was a little less precise. Finally, the fate of the library is increasingly neglected until it is no longer tangible.
Ibn Khallikan; Historian (d. 681 H) : His book was sold to pay off debts
Ibn Khallikan is one of the most important Muslim historians in Islamic history. One of his most famous books is Wafayat al-A'yan, a compilation of biographies of scholars based on the year of death.
His full name is Ahmad bin Muhammad Ibn Khallikan. During his life he once served as Qadhi al-Qudhat, a position above the judge to decide and give fatwas related to various community problems.
He is a great Faqih . His understanding of the hadith is also deep. However, he is better known as a historian, considering his Wafayat al-A'yan book which became a reference for various scholars after him in writing biographies of scholars. His other writings are also many.
But unfortunately, after the death of Ibn Khallikan, it turned out that he still left quite a lot of debt. The property he left behind was only a shirt he wore before he died. Finally it was decided by the family, to pay off all his debts all the books in his collection should be sold. In the end, all his intellectual heritage passed to other people.
