Sukamiskin Islamic Boarding School in Bandung, The Oldest Islamic Boarding School in West Java
Long ago a kiai did not just open a boarding school. But it requires hard work and consideration. Such as Tebuireng, Lirboyo, Ploso and old Islamic boarding schools in general in the archipelago. First, the kiai entered areas where there were many obstacles.
However, with the spirit of "protecting", as Gus Mus kiai said is "alladzina yandzurunal ummah bi'ainirrahmah", those who look at the people with a view full of love and affection. Villages, villages and settlements that were originally pitch dark became luminous.
Residents who were initially imprisoned and vehemently opposed gradually fell in love with the kiai's preaching. This is what happened in a village which was eventually named Sukamiskin, by KH. R. Muhammad Alqo.
Because more and more local residents want to recite the Koran to KH. R. Muhammad Alqo, until he made a prayer room, then a mosque as a study center. It turned out that the mosque was not able to accommodate it, so he required him to donate and build a building which later established a pesantren which was named after the name of his village, Pondok Pesantren Sukamiskin.
The origin of the name Sukamiskin is taken from a series of Arabic words "Suq" and "Misk". Suq means market and Misk means perfume. So lughawi means "Scented Oil Market". The name was taken because at that time Sukamiskin was the first center in the city of Bandung which was visited by many people to seek their knowledge in the field of religion in particular.
Thus, it is increasingly known both in the city of Bandung and in West Java, so that it is as if a famous market visited by many people from every corner, which is fragrant with the knowledge that he brings.
The Sukamiskin Islamic Boarding School was founded by KH. Raden Muhammad bin Alqo in 1881 AD in Sukamiskin Bandung, West Java. Many did not think that the Sukamiskin Islamic Boarding School had been around for a long time, and produced many kiai who eventually established Islamic boarding schools in the city of Bandung.
Many of the ulama and kiai who now have names and have great influence in the Priangan community in particular and the people of the West Java area in general are the result of learning and teaching knowledge at the Sukamiskin Islamic Boarding School.
Many of them later set up Islamic boarding schools as a place to utilize the knowledge they had acquired while in Sukamiskin. Naturally, because in fact the pesantren that has existed since the Dutch colonial era is the oldest pesantren in Bandung and even West Java.
Sukamiskin Islamic Boarding School is under the leadership of KH. R. Muhammad Alqo for approximately 29 years (1881-1910 AD/1300-1329 H). In this period of time he succeeded in educating his students to become great scholars, one of whom was the National Hero KH. Zainal Mustofa. After KH. R. Muhammad Alqo died, the leadership of the pesantren shifted to his son, KH. R. Ahmad Dimyati and his son-in-law RHS Anisah.
Before leading the boarding school KH. R. Ahmad Dimyati studied at the Garut Kresek Islamic Boarding School who later lived in Mecca for nine years with KH. Ahmad Sanusi (Founder of the Sukabumi Gunung Quail Islamic Boarding School). It was during his time (1910-1946 AD/1329-1365 H) that the Sukamiskin Islamic Boarding School became increasingly fragrant and bright in its name in the West Java area.
KH. R. Ahmad Dimyathi is better known as Mama Gedong. Ajengan Dimyathi is the founder of Ngalogat Sunda (a method of interpreting books in Sundanese) as well as many of his works in Sundanese related to the science of fiqh, monotheism, tasawuf and poetry.
In this second period KH. R. Ahmad Dimyati assisted by KH. R. Muhammad Chalil, his own brother. For approximately 36 years, the Sukamiskin Islamic Boarding School has experienced success. However, after the death of KH. R. Ahmad Dimyati, Pondok Pesantren experienced a vacuum for approximately two years because it was hampered by the war before Indonesia's independence.
After the country was safe again and independence had been proclaimed, then KH. R Haedar Dimyati, son of KH. R. Ahmad Dimyati, began to re-start the pesantren which had been in hiatus and managed to restore it to its original state even though in a rather long period of time. KH. R. Haedar Dimyati died in 1967 M.
After the death of KH. R. Haedar Dimyati, the leader of the Islamic Boarding School, is held by his wife, RH Siti Romlah bint KH. R. Muhammad Burhan (Founder of Pesantren Cijaura Buah Batu Bandung), and his younger brother KH. R. Sofwan. While the son of KH. R. Haedar Dimyati, namely R. Abdul Aziz, studied at the Lirboyo Islamic Boarding School Kediri led by KH. Mahrus Ali.
But before the completion of his studies, R. Abdul Aziz, his brother (the eldest daughter of KH. R. Haedar) married a prominent student, KH. Imam Shonhaji (also a student of the Kediri Lirboyo Islamic Boarding School, before studying at the Sukamiskin Islamic Boarding School). So since then the leadership of the Islamic Boarding School turned to KH. Imam Sonhaji.
Only then until now Sukamiskin Islamic Boarding School was cared for by KH. R. Abdul Aziz Haedar bin KH. R. Haedar Dimyati, one of NU's oldest clerics. Ajengan Abdul Aziz is very simple and unpretentious, but has farsightedness for this nation. He explained and mapped carefully the current socio-political conditions.
He is not a political kiai or a politician, his activities are only nurturing the Sukamiskin santri (who he calls his children), but he has a very far-sighted view of the current state of the nation.
When we representatives from the Central LDNU asked him to pray, he refused to be called a kiai. "I'm not a kiai, I'm just a boss of Persib ..." he said while laughing crisply. "I'm afraid that I will increase my number of students, because this (Islamic boarding school) was mandated by my parents."
His message, "If you are sincere in taking care of NU, God willing, you will be rich!"
At the end of the conversation, we were invited by him to look at the classic photos plastered on the walls of Ndalem Kiai Abdul Aziz Haedar. Many memories can be extracted from the photos. Also Ndalem / Kiai Abdul Aziz's residence is an ancient house that is hundreds of years old, but still stands strong and elegant.
The house has been visited by the founders and fighters of NU, government officials and figures from various ethnic and religious backgrounds. May he live a long, healthy and afiyat life. Amen.
