Talking about Nurcholish Madjid

Talking about Nurcholish Madjid

In Indonesia, we often encounter the name Nurcholis. I myself have several friends who bear that name. My first KKN friend in Jogja, who came from Pati-Central Java, was named Nurkholis. My friend from Ciamis-West Java, activist from LBH Jakarta, Nurkholis is also his name. My teacher at Pesantren Kotagede-Jogjakarta, who is smiling, is named Nurkholis. Before I met the three Nurkholis, in my village, Cirebon-West Java, I was already familiar with a man named Nurkholis, who died twenty years ago, who was none other than my own cousin.

Nurkholis, with different spellings, is a common name, especially in villages that have many langgars or in Islamic boarding schools or schools that bear the emblem of the ministry of religion.

However, Nurkholis, whose son is Ki Madjid, is only one. His name is written like this: Nurcholish Madjid. The second name is what makes the first name special. And because of Nurkholis too, Madjid's name is famous. The two cannot be separated, just like the ordinary names of Abdurrahman and Wahid. But when combined, Abdurrahman Wahid, hears or reads it, our hearts tremble. Oops, but don't conclude, yes, that combination of names will be special. Do not. Because there is an example of a combination of two popular names, Susilo and Bambang, who are just ordinary people. The name Susilo Bambang is still good, as good as Nurcholish Madjid or Abdurrahman Wahid.

Back to the special name earlier: Nurcholish Madjid. I don't know this person, I've met him, seen him in person, and only once, in Jogja, around 2000. But his face and voice are familiar, because they often appear in newspapers and television. His name often appears in conversations about Islam, on campuses, in the media, either slipped or became the main theme.

Of course, the name Nurcholish Madjid also "penetrated" the pesantren. The two have an affinity, not only because Nurkholis Madjid is a fan of Islamic studies and boarding schools as Islamic institutions, but because he is a boarding school student.

Nurkholis Madjid is a santri, not only because of his basic education at the mosque and then continuing in Gontor, but his father, Ki Madjid, has a relationship with Hadrotusy Sheikh Muhammad Hasyim Asy'ari.

It was this background that made Nurkholish Madjid so close to Gus Dur. The intimacy between the two can be through mocking and criticizing each other. It was this background that made Nurkholish Madjid and Kiai Ilyas Ruchiat distrust each other and eat sambal pesantren together, of course with Gus Mus, Kiai Irfan Zidni, Pak Masdar F Mas'udi, and so on.

Strangely, the name Nurkholis Madjid in the pesantren is like a foreign item. Foreign goods are accepted. But touching it must be careful, if necessary put in a place that is not visible, untouched.

My friend, a student from Brebes, Central Java, recounted that when he was holding the book Islam, Doctrine, Civilization by Nurkholish Madjid, the kiai said, “Be careful, Kang, it's a Mu'tazilah book, you read it, hide it. ”

My friend who recited the Koran together even said louder than my friend's kiai above, “Oh, that's the person who criticizes Imam al-Ghozali's practice of Sufism, yes, who underestimates Ta'limul Muta'allim . Masdar's friend, right?" Santri who are fanatical about traditional pesantren say, "Gontor is like that."

The views about Nurkholis Madjid above do not deserve to be the basis for staying away from someone, whoever he is, moreover these views can be easily dismissed, moreover they can still be invited to sit down to open a conversation.

For students, talking about Nurkholis Madjid is (supposedly) "easy". It's easier if you add Mu'tazilah, Imam al-Ghozali, Ta'limul Muta'allim , Pak Masdar, or Gontor. All of that can be talked about, moreover everything is said calmly. Yes, it's a little cold, it 's still normal. The important thing about the santri is not because it is cold or warm, but because they can still be invited to sit together. Wong was asked to run or left alone, the santri still wanted to . It's the ones who are bothered, they're the ones who maintain itNurkholish Madjid corrupted Islam, the stooges of the Jews, and even all infidels. Things like this and this are difficult, let alone being invited to sit down, the name alone is often fake. Things like this are far from the morals of students.

Let's talk about him. Now is the time to reflect on the thoughts and actions of Nurcholish Madjid. At the end of August, we commemorate the eighth haul. Want to talk about his work, come on. His writings are many. He is a scientist that we know from his work , not from the results of highlighting professors or doctors, or being proud of his alma mater. Even the nickname "Cak" is so attached and familiar, like our familiarity with pecel catfish traders or our regular chicken satay.

If there are differences of opinion, methods and so on with him, that's normal, right? But we must not reduce meeting and talking, just like our difference with the regular catfish pecel seller, different, but need each other. Fun.

Wanting to talk about his haliyah is also very appropriate. He is not an intellectual who only focuses on books, but also pays attention to his behavior patterns and speech. This is important to broadcast. Because, nowadays, many intellectuals who are sweet on the lips, talk about it. While his actions are underestimated by himself on the grounds that the act is a personal matter or has nothing to do with it. There are many people who are enthusiastic about saying that academic ethics must be upheld, but on the streets and everywhere they talk about robots? Not a few, right, people politely say that the morals of the pesantren must be spread, but cawuk there, cawuk here?

The deceased's familiarity with many people is evidence of his high knowledge and noble character. Both, high knowledge and noble character, are magnets that are very difficult to reach, but are united in Nurkholis Madjid. Al Fatihah..
