History of the Establishment of the Nurul Jadid Islamic Boarding School
Nurul Jadid's Caregivers
The Nurul Jadid Islamic Boarding School is a boarding school that initially has not been visited by many students. Since the presence of KH. Zaini Mun'im on 10 Muharram 1981 in Karanganyar village, which at that time he did not intend to establish a boarding school. Seeing the condition of people who still seem ordinary in thinking about life in the real world, he isolated himself from the evil, greed and cruelty of the Dutch colonial and wanted to continue his journey to the interior of Yogyakarta to join his friends. KH. Zaini Mun'im has no intention of establishing a Pondok Pesantren, because he aspires to be a broadcaster of Islam whose distribution is through the Ministry of Religion (Depag). However, the intention failed, because since he
settled in the village of Karanganyar, he was given a mandate from God by receiving a deposit in the form of two students to study religious knowledge. The two students named Syafi'udin came from Gondosuli, Probolinggo Anyar City and Saifuddin from Sidodadi, Paiton District, Probolinggo. The presence of the two students is a mandate from God that should not be ignored. At that time he settled with his two students in the village of Karanganyar. But not long after, KH. Zaini Mun'im was arrested by the Dutch and imprisoned in Probolinggo, because at that time he was one of the people wanted by the Dutch from Madura Island. The Netherlands, considers KH. Zaini Mun'im is a very dangerous person who is able to influence and mobilize the people to fight against them (the Dutch colonialists). Determination and he is strong by holding fast to the motto "liberty or dead" - undeniable freedom or death. With the Dutch's tough attitude towards him to tell the whereabouts of his friends to the Dutch Government, he still did not open his voice even though he was forced to. Three months passed in prison, then he was returned to Karanganyar to take care of his students who had been waiting for his arrival.
Since the arrival of KH. Zaini Mun'im, many of the students who started arriving came from Situbondo, Bondowoso, Malang, Madura and Probolinggo. They are Muyan, Abd. Mu'thi, Arifin, Makyar,
KH. Hefny Razaq, et al. Overview of the Nurul Jadid Islamic Boarding School, (Probolinggo: Public Relations and Protocol for the Secretariat of the Nurul Jadid Islamic Boarding School, 2018),
Baidlawi, and Jufri. With the presence of KH. Zaini Mun'im felt obliged to educate them and kept trying to accompany his students and decided not to join his friends in the interior of Yogyakarta. The longer he lived in Karanganyar with his students the more peace and comfort he had. So one day he was surprised by a summons from the Minister of Religion to become an adviser to the pilgrims, he accepted the banquet.
That way, the Pesantren which was his temporary care left and was replaced by KH. Sufyan. KH. Sufyan is a student assigned by KH. Hasan Sepuh (Care for PP. Zainul Hasan Genggong, Kraksaan) to help KH. Zaini Mun'im while reciting to him. Since he was trusted to be an advisor to the pilgrims, people gradually began to know him from his tenacity and courage and fortitude. Besides the presence of KH. Sufyan, who has helped him, is well-known to the public for his frequent assistance, especially the efficacy of his prayers.
At that time, the Nurul Jadid Islamic Boarding School had around 30 students under the guidance of KH. Munthaha and KH. Sufyan. With wisdom and charisma KH. Sufyan was able to build several huts made of bamboo (cangkruk) for the residence of the santri at that time. With great amazement, after KH. Zaini Mun'im from the holy land saw several huts
stood up, he was moved to think about the future of his students. Krangyar village occupied by KH. Zaini Mun'im is still in the wilderness, the thickets that still crowd the land area made him think of inviting his students to clean it up. In the end, a boarding school was established which was quite large and became very large as it is known today.
Nurul Jadid was the name that was taken into consideration at the time, with the proposals from the kiai, KH. Baqir and Habib Abdullah bin Faqih. The proposed names are "Nurul Jadid" and "Nurul Hadith". With these two names, KH. Zaini Mun'im had to choose one, then he decided to choose the name Nurul Jadid for the eternity of his pesantren. Because he considered that the name was very suitable with the pesantren he had built.
