The Story of the Land Keepers and Sugarcane Cutters being mauled by Dozens of Lions

 

وَعَنِ اِبْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اَللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا; أَنَّ اَلنَّبِيَّ  صلى الله عليه وسلم  قَالَ:  لَا تَتَّخِذُوا شَيْئاً فِيهِ اَلرُّوحُ غَرَضًا

Meaning: From Ibnu 'Abbas ra, he said, Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him. said, 'Do not make living animals the targets of the moon,'" (HR Muslim).

Alkisah, one time two officers of Abu Bakar Muhammad bin Sahl asy-Syahid al-Wasithi al-Qadhi were carrying out the task of guarding the property and land owned by their employer. They take care of the land that is in the barren area near the river.

As narrated by at-Tanukhi in his book c , the guardians then went with some people to the forest to cut sugarcane. In the middle of the journey, they saw a lion cub like a wild cat. Suddenly one of them killed the lion cub.

Not long after, came a male lion and a female lion who were the father and mother of the lion cub that had been killed. Not seeing his son, the two lions looked for him. They both then found out if their son was killed by people who wanted to cut sugar cane.

The people who killed a lion cub apparently felt nothing. They do not know, if they are being sought by a pair of angry lions. They then rested and slept in the middle of the forest when night came. But suddenly came two lions who wanted to prey on them. Those who heard the lion's voice immediately went and came out of the forest, until they finally found an old house outside the forest.

They then gathered and climbed to the top of the house. Seeing that there was a room in the old house, they then used it to stay and hide at night.

The male lion who was angry because his cub was killed, finally followed and looked for the cane cutters who had come out of the forest. The lion finally reached the house where the people were hiding, and went straight in. When he reached the central room of the old house, the lion then tried to jump to enter the room where the two officers of Abu Bakar Muhammad bin Sahl and the sugar cane cutters were hiding, but he was unable to.

The lion then went and climbed on top of a hill in the desert. On the hill, the lion roared. Not long after, the lioness came to the old house. The lioness then tried to jump into where the people were hiding, but she was also unable to do so like the previous lioness.

Seeing the two lions who were unable to jump high, people gathered. However, the two lions actually roared louder. Soon, several lions came, and they all jumped, but the lions were still unable to reach the room where the people were hiding. The lions continued to jump until there were a dozen of them, but were still unable to reach the people's hiding place.

The people who were hiding in the room had given up, their condition was as if they were really going to die. Because, if there is a lion that is able to get to their hiding place. Automatically they will become the months of dozens of lions.

In the midst of such conditions, suddenly the lions gathered in a circle. They put their mouths on the ground, and roared in unison. The people who saw this were even more frightened, especially after the incident there was a hole in the ground which was the breath of the lion's roar.

Shortly after that, came a black lion, skinny, with its feathers that had fallen off, and small. All the lions then met him while playing their tails in front and around him. The skinny lion came with the lioness behind him. The skinny black lion then saw the place of the people who killed the lion cub.

The thin black lion then began to pay attention to the position of the people who were hiding. He then took a breath, and jumped until he reached the front room close to where the people were hiding. Seeing this, the people panicked and immediately locked the door of his room. They also gathered behind the door to hold the door so that the lion could not enter.

However, the skinny black lion kept pushing on the door with its back until some of the door boards broke. The lion then plunged his ass into the people, and one of them then cut off the lion's tail with a machete. Because its tail was cut off, the lion roared loudly and ran, then fell to the ground. It continued to scratch, bite, and tear with its claws until many lions were killed.

The incident also made the other lions run away from the old house. After all the lions ran, the people then came down. They left the place until they finally found a village. It was in the village that the sugarcane cutters recounted the incident that almost took their lives.

The story above is proof that, bad treatment or disturbing the peace of life of other God's creatures can have an impact on being a catastrophe. Therefore, Islam commands its adherents to love animals and not to harm them. This is according to the words of the Prophet Muhammad. which prohibits humans from harming and abusing animals:

وَعَنِ اِبْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اَللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا; أَنَّ اَلنَّبِيَّ  صلى الله عليه وسلم  قَالَ:  لَا تَتَّخِذُوا شَيْئاً فِيهِ اَلرُّوحُ غَرَضًا

Meaning: From Ibnu 'Abbas ra, he said, Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him. said, 'Do not make living animals the targets of the moon,'" (HR Muslim).

The above hadith is proof that the Prophet, peace be upon him. forbids humans to make the lives of animals a bet or a game. Because animals also have the right to live and they have feelings just like humans. For this reason, humans should also treat the animals around them well.
