The story of Propet Nuh and the people who drowned in the Great Flood

The story of Propet Nuh and the people who drowned in the Great Flood

Prophet Noah AS is famous for the story of the ship to sail through the great flood . However, outside the ark, there are many lessons and lessons to be learned from the story of Noah.

Prophet Noah is the third prophet who deserves to be believed after Prophet Adam AS and Prophet Idris AS. Noah is the ninth descendant of the Prophet Adam.

The name Noah comes from the Syriac language which means 'thankful'. Prophet Noah also received a title from Allah SWT as abdussyakur . The title means a grateful servant in accordance with the letter Al-Isra verse 3.

"[That is] the descendants of those whom We brought with Noah. Indeed, he is a servant [of God] who is very grateful," reads the translation of Al-Isra verse 3.

Prophet Noah is also included in the messenger of Ulul Azmi, that is with extraordinary perseverance and fortitude. According to Al-Ankabut verse 14, Prophet Noah even preached for 950 years.

Prophet Noah was sent by Allah SWT to call the teachings of Allah to the people of Bani Rasib who worship idols in the form of statues. Tyranny at that time was also increasing rapidly.

With patience, Noah began to preach to his people. He taught to worship Allah, leave immorality, and do good.

However, instead of obeying, Noah's people still did not believe the teachings and warnings conveyed. The Bani Rasib did not even believe that Noah was an apostle.

"According to history, the number of followers of Prophet Noah AS is not more than 80 people. The followers of Prophet Noah AS consist of poor and weak people," quoted from Prophet Noah AS: The Miracle of the Giant Ark by Testriono and Tim Divaro.

However, Noah was not discouraged. He continued to preach despite receiving many reproaches. Every time Noah preached, they put their fingers in their ears and covered their faces with clothes as a sign of rejection. The story of Noah's struggle is found in Surah Noah verses 1-12.

The followers of Prophet Noah were even expelled by the rulers and rich people at that time.

The people of Prophet Noah also challenged Noah to bring the punishment that Noah always delivered.

"They said 'O Noah, indeed you have argued with us, and you have prolonged your argument against us, so bring us the punishment that you threatened us with, if you are among the righteous'." Here is the translation of Surat Hud verse 32.

Noah then replied that the punishment can only be brought by Allah. God then asked Prophet Noah not to be sad and to remain steadfast in his position.

Prophet Noah then prayed that Allah would punish the disbelievers. Allah then ordered Noah to build an ark in the form of a large ship to transport believers and a pair of animals. Allah says that the disbelievers will be drowned.

On that order, Prophet Noah gathered his followers and worked together to build an ark of wood during the day and night for several years. Noah's hard work also received ridicule from despicable people.

After the ark was built and the sign of a great flood was coming, Noah ordered his followers to board the ship. Slowly, the flood waters began to pool submerge the land.

"So We saved Noah and those who were with him in a ship full of cargo. Then after that We drowned those who remained," reads the translation of the letter Asy-Syu'ara verses 119-120.

Among those who were drowned, including the eldest son of the Prophet Noah, Kan'an and his disobedient wife. Prophet Noah had invited Kan'an to board the ship, but he refused and believed he could save himself from the big water.

Prophet Noah then realized that his love for his son made him forget Allah.

Noah's ship then pulled over in the mountains of Arafat. After the water receded, Allah ordered Noah to come down and start a new life.

From the story above, may we be able to take Prophet Noah's steadfastness and patience in being thankful and worshiping Allah SWT as one of the important lessons.

From this story it is known that God's promise in the form of punishment and retribution in the form of disaster is true. Retribution will come in time. God will also only save his people who believe.

"When experiencing a test from God, whether a person is safe or not depends on God's mercy, not because of whose lineage, not because of the Prophet's son. If he is not pious, his fate will be like the son of Prophet Noah," said the head of Al Afifiyah boarding school, KH Wahyul Afif Al-Ghafiqi.
