The story of Prophet Luth 'Alaihissalam
The story of Prophet Luth 'Alaihissalam
Prophet Luth 'alaihissalam migrated with his uncle Prophet Ibrahim 'alaihissalam to Egypt. The two stayed there for some time, then returned to Palestine. In the middle of the journey to Palestine, Prophet Lut asked his uncle Prophet Ibrahim 'alaihissalam for permission to go to the land of Sodom (near the Dead Sea in Jordan) because God had chosen him as His Prophet and His Messenger sent to that land, so Prophet Ibrahim allowed it and Prophet Lut went to Sodom and got married there.
At that time, the morals of the people were very bad, they did not protect themselves from immorality and were not ashamed to do evil, betray their friends, and commit robberies. In addition, they committed heinous acts that no one had ever done before in the universe. They come to men to release their lust and leave women.
At that moment, Prophet Luth 'alaihissalam invited the people of Sodom to believe and abandon that heinous act. He said to them,
" Why are you not pious?" - Verily I am a trustworthy Messenger (sent) to you, - So fear Allah and obey me. - And I never asked you for a reward for that invitation; my reward is none other than the Lord of the universe. – Why do you come to the type of men among men, – And you leave the wives that your God made for you, even you are people who go beyond the limits.” (QS. Ash Shu'ara: 160-161)
But the people of Luth did not care about the call, even being proud of it and mocking it. Even so, Prophet Luth 'alaihissalam did not lose hope, he remained patient in prosecuting his people; invites them wisely and politely, he forbids and warns them from doing evil and heinous acts. However, none of his people believed in him, and they preferred misguidance and disobedience, they even said to him with their rough hearts, "Bring upon us the punishment of God, if you are among the righteous." (QS. Al 'Ankabbut: 29)
They also threatened to expel Prophet Luth 'alaihissalam from their village because he was indeed a foreigner, so Luth was angry at the attitude of his people; he and his believing family stayed away from them.
His wife prefers to disbelieve and join his people and help his people ostracize him and make fun of him. Against this wife, Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala made a parable,
" God made Noah's wife and Lot's wife as a parable for the disbelievers. Both were under the supervision of two pious servants among our servants; then the two wives were unfaithful to their (respective) husbands, so the husbands could not help them in the slightest from (torment) of God; and it was said (to both of them), "Enter into Jahannam with those who enter (jahannam)." (QS. At Tahrim: 10)
The betrayal of Prophet Lut's wife to her husband was due to her disbelief and disbelief in Allah Subhnahu wa Ta'ala .
Then Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala sent three angels in the form of handsome human beings, then they stopped by to meet Prophet Ibrahim 'alaihissalam . Prophet Ibrahim 'alaihissalam thought that they were human, so Prophet Ibrahim immediately feasted them by slaughtering a fat calf, but they did not want to eat.
The angels also gave good news to Prophet Ibrahim, that Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala will grant him a child from his wife, Sarah, named Ishaq 'alaihissalam . The angels then informed Prophet Ibrahim 'alaihissalam , that they would go to the land of Sodom to punish its inhabitants for their disbelief and disobedience.
Then Prophet Ibrahim 'alaihissalam informed him that there was Lut, so the angels calmed him down by telling him that Allah would save him and his family apart from his disbelieving wife.
The angels came out of Abraham's house and went to the land of Sodom, until they came to Lot's house and they came as handsome young men. When Prophet Luth 'alaihissalam saw them, then Prophet Luth was worried about their condition, and no one knew of their arrival except Prophet Luth's wife, until finally his wife came out of her house and informed her people about the arrival of Prophet Luth's handsome guests.
So his people came rushing to the house of the Prophet Lut with the intention of doing heinous deeds with his guests. They gathered together crammed near the door of his house while calling the Prophet Lut in a loud voice asking the Prophet Lut to bring out his guests to them.
Each one of them hoped to have fun and channel his lust to his guests, then Prophet Lut prevented them from entering his house and prevented them from disturbing his guests, he said to them, "Indeed they are my guests; so don't make me ashamed, - And fear God and don't make me humiliated." (QS. Al Hijr: 68-69)
Prophet Lut also reminded them, that Allah Subhnahu wa Ta'ala has created women for them so that they can channel their lust, but Lut's people still want to enter his house. At that time, Prophet Lut 'alaihissalam did not find an intelligent person from among them who could explain their mistakes and finally Prophet Lut felt weakness facing them while saying, "If I had the strength (to reject you) or if I could take refuge in a strong family (of course I do). (Surah Huud: 80)
At that time, Prophet Luth's guests told Prophet Luth who they were, and that they were not human but angels who came to inflict punishment on his wicked people.
Not long after, the people of Luth broke down the door of his house and found the angels, then one of the angels blinded their eyes and they returned in a state of insanity between the walls of the house. Then the angels asked Prophet Lut to go with his family at night, because punishment will befall them in the morning. They also advised him that he and his family should not look back when the punishment came down, so that it would not befall them.
At night, Prophet Luth 'alaihissalam and his family left the country of Sodom. After they left it and the time of Dawn came, then God sent them a painful punishment that befell the land.
At that moment, the land shook with a violent shaking, an angel plucked the land with the tip of his wing and lifted it up into the sky, then turned the land upside down; the upper part becomes the lower part and the lower part becomes the upper part, then they are showered with hot stones continuously. Allah Ta'ala said, " So when Our punishment came, We turned the land of the people of Lut upside down (we turned it upside down), and We showered them with stones from the burning ground in torrents, - Which was given a sign by your Lord , and the torment is not far from the wrongdoers ." (QS. Hud: 82-83)
Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala saved Prophet Lut and his family apart from his wife with the mercy of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala , because they kept the message, were grateful for Allah's favor and worshiped Him.
So Prophet Luth and his family became a good example in terms of purity and cleanliness, while his people became a bad example and a lesson for the generations that came after him. Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala says,
" And We left in that land a sign for those who fear a painful punishment." (Trans. Adz Dzaariyat: 37)
