The Story of Prophet Moses Spoken by the Devil

The Story of Prophet Moses Spoken by the Devil

The story of Prophet Musa 'alaihis salam is found quite a lot in the Qur'an, such as the story of him facing Pharaoh's magicians, when he crossed the sea to avoid the pursuit of Pharaoh 's army , to the story of his meeting with Khidir. All these stories contain valuable lessons for us Muslims.

Imam Al-Ghazali (d. 505 H) in Ihya` 'Ulumiddin wrote a story about the conversation of the Prophet Moses with the devil. One thing that is interesting from the conversation is that when the devil lectured Moses about the things that humans must be wary of if they do not want to be controlled by the devil. Let's see the story.

Alkisah, one time when Prophet Musa was sitting at his stop, the devil came wearing a colorful burnus (clothing like a robe with a head covering). However, before the devil approached Moses, he took off the clothes and put them down. Then he approached Moses.

" Peace be upon you, O Musa." Who is the Devil?

"Who are you?" asked Moses.

"I'm a devil." Answer the devil.

"May God not grant you salvation (answer to the devil's greeting to Prophet Moses), why did you come here?"

"I have come here to say hello to you because of your (noble) position and position before Allah."

Prophet Musa who was curious about the clothes that the devil had just removed asked.

"What clothes did I see on you (that you were wearing)?"

"That's the burnus , which I used to kidnap the hearts of Adam's descendants." kidnapping human hearts is an expression that shows that demons rule over human hearts.

This answer made Moses even more curious, then he continued to ask the devil.

“What action, if performed by humans, would allow you to dominate them?”

Iblis answered without hesitation, "when he is proud of himself ( 'ujub ), considers his good deeds to be many and forgets his sins."

After giving this answer, the devil lectured the Prophet Moses.

“And I warn you about three things. First, do not be alone with a woman, because men and women are not alone unless I become their friend so that I will seduce both of them (for immorality). Second, do not make a promise to Allah unless you fulfill that promise. And thirdly, do not intend to give charity unless you realize that intention (by giving charity), because when someone intends to give charity but he does not realize it, then I become his friend and will prevent him from giving charity (only stop at the intention)."

After warning Moses about these three things, the devil left him. Then he spoke to himself, "Now Moses knows the things that he will warn people about."

Hopefully we can all learn from the story of Prophet Moses' brief conversation with the devil. God bless you .
