The Story of Sarri as-Saqthi Hitting the Jug in the Dream Realm, Broken in Real Life

The Story of Sarri as-Saqthi Hitting the Jug in the Dream Realm, Broken in Real Life

Al-Junaid visited the residence of Sarri as-Saqthi, a well-known scholar of his time. At that time, Sarri as-Saqthi was crying with a broken jug in front of him. Al-Junaid let him cry. He didn't say anything.
When Sarri as-Saqthi finished crying, then al-Junaid asked him what had made him cry, "If you may know, what made him cry like that?"
Sarri as-Saqthi answered it with a fairly long story.
***
One day, Sarri as-Saqthi was fasting. On one occasion, his daughter came to him with a jug. The jug contained water for him to use to break his fast in the afternoon.
A moment later, he hung the jug in one corner of his house. The goal is for the water in the jug to turn cold and ready to drink when the evening call to prayer arrives.
After his daughter resigned, Sarri as-Saqthi fell asleep. Unable to resist sleepiness, he fell asleep. In his sleep that time, he had a very strange dream.
In his dream, he was visited by a woman (angel). The woman was wearing silver clothes and sandals. Beautiful and charming. Sarri as-Saqthi felt that she was the only woman with such beautiful legs that he had ever met.
On that occasion, Sarri as-Saqthi also asked him.
"You came here, for whom?" asked Sarri as-Saqthi.
The woman replied that she came for anyone who did not cool the water in the jug. Sarri as-Saqthi understands, it is a satire for him.
Therefore, Sarri as-Saqthi immediately hit the hanging jug with his hand. No doubt, the jug broke. The water in it spilled. Splinters from the broken jug were scattered everywhere.
***
Although the incident of beating the jug happened in a dream, but strangely, when Sarri as-Saqthi woke up, the jug actually broke. The fragments of the jug were literally scattered about as happened in a dream.
The fragments were still left alone by Sarri as-Saqthi like the beginning of the incident: still scattered. Even to the point of dust. The dusty jug fragments were always seen by al-Junaid every time he visited Sarri as-Saqthi's residence.
For some Sufi scholars or anyone who has reached a certain spiritual level, enjoying worldly luxuries is a taboo subject, and therefore, must be abandoned. However, in this paper, the author will not discuss it, but about dreams.
Dreams, for some people, are sleeping flowers. Because only as a "flower", then it only serves as a decoration or entertainment. However, this does not apply to certain groups or circles.
For “them”, i.e. special people chosen by God, dreams can be important things that will have an impact on real life. Through dreams, they can gain knowledge. Through dreams, they get a signal to do and or leave something.
In fact, Allah's command to Prophet Ibrahim to slaughter his son, Ismail, also occurred in a dream (Read: QS. ash-Shaffat [37]: 102). This incident became the basis for the provision of sacrificial worship in the month of Zulhijah and is valid forever, today and tomorrow.
As a result, on the one hand, dreams for us are simple things. However, for those who have been close to Allah, no. Dreams can be a means to always get knowledge from Him. Wallahu a'lam .
