Stories of Ramadan Fasting

Fasting is an important worship in Islam to keep the mind. By fasting, a person can control his lust and anger. This tradition has existed since the time of ignorance:

On the authority of Ibn Abbas, he said: The Prophet - may God bless him and grant him peace - came to Madinah and found the Jews fasting, so they said: They said: This is the day of God in which Moses, and he was drowned in it.

"It was narrated from Ibn Abbas who said that when he migrated to Medina, the Messenger of Allah. meet the Jewish community. Apparently, at that time they were fasting 'Ashura (fasting on the 10th of Muharram), because God saved Moses from being chased by Pharaoh on that day, and instead drowned Pharaoh in the Nile.

"In that case, we also have the right to fast on that day," said the Prophet to the Jews. Finally the Prophet fasted 'Ashura and told his companions to fast as well." (HR Ibn Majah)

The Prophet deliberately only required fasting for one day in the month of Muharram, because some friends who had just converted to Islam might object to being burdened with fasting for a whole month.

On the other hand, fasting 'Ashura aims to motivate his companions to educate his friends so that in the future they will get used to fasting. " It 's just that the Jews fast, when the Muslims don't want to fast," more or less the Prophet motivated his companions.

According to Sheikh Thahir bin 'Asyur, a Tunisian caliber scholar, may God have mercy on him, the 'Ashura' fast is obligatory before the Ramadan fasting order comes down one year after the 'Ashura' fast is made obligatory. So the obligation to fast Ramadan occurs in the 2nd year of Hijri. Therefore, after Ramadan fasting is obligatory, Ashura fasting is no longer obligatory, it is only Sunnah.

"Narrated from Aisyah radiyallahu 'anha who once knew the Messenger of God. making fasting 'Ashura obligatory before fasting Ramadan. When the fasting of Ramadan was obligatory, then the Messenger of Allah allowed his companions to choose whether to fast 'Ashura' or not" (HR Muslim).

According to Ibn 'Asyur, since the 2nd year of Hijri, the duration of fasting in the month of Ramadan has been carried out the same as Muslims at this time, starting from the dawn of sadiq or there are scholars until sunset. This was explained by him when interpreting surah al-Baqarah verse 185.

The Prophet himself had the opportunity to fast in Ramadan nine times from the 2nd year of the Hijri until the 11th year of the Hijri, the year in which the Prophet Muhammad SAW. died However, Ibnu 'Ashur believed that Prophet Muhammad SAW. has done the tradition of fasting since he was tahannuts (secluded) in Hira cave which at that time the Al-Qur'an was also revealed there in the month of Ramadan.

So before receiving the revelation in the form of the Qur'an, the Prophet had first performed fasts before Muslims were required to fast in the month of Ramadan. The Prophet did this fasting in order to maintain the traditions of the divine religions before Islam.
