Tariq Ramadan, Ilmuwan Muslim Pengusung Kesetaraan di Eropa
For him, it is not enough for Muslims to be granted a residence permit in Europe, but they must also have the same political, economic and social rights. This thought may be a reflection of Tariq's experience as an immigrant from Egypt who was born and lived in Switzerland since 1962.
The grandson of Hasan al-Banna also sued the stereotype of the Arab nation – Muslim – which is always viewed negatively by the West. This perspective leads to the conclusion that without Islam the problem will be reduced and this is clearly wrong. In the end a Muslim will be confused to choose between maintaining their original identity or having to assimilate into European culture where they are forced to lose their religious and cultural norms that they brought from their home country.
Tariq's thought which is quite harsh has brought a lot of praise and criticism. In fact, in an extreme act, Tariq was barred from entering the United States during the Bush administration and unable to give lectures at universities in France. This is because Tariq is considered a figure full of ambiguity, double discourse and works to Islamize Europe. Tariq responded to critics who mocked him as a “ doublespeak” in his book “What I Believe”, denying that these people did not understand the methodology he used.
He explained that he was not a double-speaking intellectual but he used different languages according to the scientific capacity of his audience but still conveyed the same meaning.
On the other hand, he confirmed that he was a controversial intellectual. That is, his thoughts will bring praise and criticism. But for him to be a controversial person is a good thing because it makes other people think and write to refute his thoughts.
This husband of faith also wrote about the approach he used as a Muslim reformer. There are three levels that he uses to develop his writing: first , he refers to the main sources, quoting the Al-Quran and the Prophet's Hadith and understanding the textual meaning of the text.
Second , he describes the scholars' interpretation of the Qur'an and Hadith and sees the possibility of other interpretations that do not change the message of the text; third , he will write down his reformist understanding, which is an understanding that can be implemented in today's life. For Tariq, being a reformer means presenting a different perspective.
In addition to actively writing about the struggles of Muslims in Europe, the son of Sayyid Ramadhan is also active in organizations and the academic world. Tariq Ramadhan is the founder of The Alter Globalization Movement , an anti-globalization movement. He is also actively nurturing the next generation of Muslim leaders in Europe. In a year he and his friends can train up to 300 youths aged 20-30 years.
Some of his friends who helped him were Zaid Shakir in the United States, Tariq Oubrou, Dubois Hussein, Sheikh Zakariya in France, Ataullah Siddiqui in England, Hamzah Picardo in Italy. He has also taught in a number of places and is Professor in Contemporary Islamic Studies and Theology at the University of Oxford, Visiting Professor at the Faculty of Islamic Studies in Qatar and the University of Malaysia Perlis, Senior Researcher at Doshisha University, Japan and is Director of the Research Center for Islamic Ethics and Legislation. in Qatar.
Until now, Tariq is still actively writing and teaching, some of his latest books are “Islam and the Arab Awakening”, “The Arab Awakening: Islam and the New Middle East”, “The Quest for Meaning, Developing a Philosophy of Pluralism”, “Radical Reform, Islamic Ethics and Liberation” and “ Au péril des idées” which he co-wrote with Edgar Morin in French.
