Uwais Al-Qarni: The Best Tabi'in Rasulullah
Uwais Al-Qarni: The Best Tabi'in Rasulullah
The story of a young man who should be an example for us Muslims, one of which is Uwais al-Qarni. Who is he and why is he so special in the mind of the Prophet? And what lessons should we take from this story?
Starting from the expression and appeal of the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam to Umar ibn al-Khathab's friend which reads as follows, "I myself (Umar) heard the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) say, "Later there will come a man named Uwais bin Amir with a group of troops from Yemen. . He comes from Murad who belongs to the tribe of Qarn. He had a skin disease (white spots on his skin) then recovered except for a small speck that was left as big as a dirham coin. He has a mother whom he is very devoted to. If he wants to swear to Allah, then what he asks for will be allowed. If you (Umar) are able to make him want to ask Allah that you be forgiven, ask him ".
In another hadith Rasulullah said, "The best Tabi'in is a man named Uwais, he has a mother and used to have a skin disease, order him to ask forgiveness for you." The two hadiths, the reader can see in a hadith narrated by Imam Muslim in hadith no. 2542.
Uwais bin Amir al-Qarni was a young man who lived at the time of the Prophet Muhammad, but he never met directly with the Prophet. In his story he really wanted to meet the Apostle but circumstances said otherwise. He had a mother whom he loved and respected very much. Uwais al-Qarni was very patient in caring for his mother. He had to give up the desire to meet the Apostle in person because he was afraid to leave his mother. Uwais is afraid that he will get the title of disobedience. He took care of him until his mother died. After his mother died he decided to meet the Apostle. He joined a group of troops from Yemen who were going to meet the Apostle, but the facts said otherwise, the Apostle had died.
Once Umar bin Khathab greeted the presence of a group of troops from Yemen, and Umar immediately asked, "Is there a person in your midst named Uwais bin Amir, then Umar entered the middle of the group and asked again, "Is it true that you are Uwais bin Amir, Uwais? replied, "Yes it is" Umar asked again, "Is it true that you are from Murad of Qarn" Uwais replied, "Yes" Umar asked again, "Is it true that you used to have a skin disease and then recovered except for one dirham," Uwais replied, "Yes", Umar asked again, "It is true that you have a mother", Uwais replied, "Yes", then Umar told about the words of the Prophet about him, and asked Uwais to pray that Allah would forgive Umar. Uwais also prayed for Umar and asked Allah for forgiveness.
What's more interesting from the continuation of this story is that, after praying for Uwais, Umar asked, "Where are you going after this?" Uwais replied, "To Kuffah", then Umar offered Uwais a recommendation, "What if I write a letter to you?" to the Person in Charge in the land of Kuffah, so that he can help you" instead Umar's offer was answered humbly by Uwas as follows, "I am being a weak (poor) person, and I prefer my situation".
The following year a distinguished person from the group went on a pilgrimage and he met Umar. As well as Umar asked about Uwais' condition, the honorable person replied, "I left Uwais in a poor condition of his house, and only had a few things in his house", Umar also said about the words of the Apostle to that person. In a story, finally the person came to Uwais, he also asked Uwais, "Ask Allah to forgive me", Uwais replied, "Didn't you just come back from shafargood person (performing the pilgrimage), the person answered "Ask Allah's forgiveness for me" and asked Uwais, "didn't you meet Umar", Uwais replied, "Yes, that's right", finally Uwais also prayed that the person would be forgiven by God.
After the incident, several people became aware of the privilege and glory of Uwais. Because of this, Uwais isolated himself from the crowd. Perhaps he was worried about the Apostle's appeal making him proud and making his heart filled with pride. Wallahu a'lam bi al-Shawab. However, there are many things that we can learn from this story.
