Abdullah bin Ubay bin Salul: Portrait of the Munafiq at the time of the Prophet
When there was a fight between Jahjah bin Mas'ud al-Ghifari and Sinan bin Mas'ud al-Juhani which finally sparked a fight between the Muhajirin and Ansar groups, Abdullah bin Ubay bin Salul arrived who took advantage of the situation to divide the Muhajirin and Ansar Muslims.
Ibn Ubay then addressed the Ansar.
“Look! The people you have helped and given shelter have betrayed you. O my people, if you love yourselves, do not help the Muhajirin anymore."
The provocations made by Ibn Ubay began to have an effect on the Ansar's trust in the Muhajirin.
The provocation incident carried out by Ibn Ubay was known by a great young man named Zaid bin Arqam.
Immediately Zaid reported the behavior of Ibn Ubay to the Messenger of Allah. The Prophet's face turned red, a sign that the Prophet's anger had peaked.
The Messenger of Allah immediately went to the Muhajirin and Ansar who had been fighting and reunited them.
The arrival of the Prophet cleared the minds of those who had been poisoned by the words of Ibn Ubayy.
The Prophet then called Abdullah bin Ubay bin Salul. He asked whether the actions reported by Zaid bin Arqam were true.
The Prophet also confirmed to Zaid bin Arqam that the events he reported to him were true.
"Do you have a grudge with Ibn Ubay O Zaid?"
"No, O Messenger."
"Is the incident you reported true, O Zaid?"
"That's right, O Messenger of Allah."
Hearing such a firm answer from Zaid bin Arqam, the Apostle then turned to ask Ibn Ubay.
"O Ibn Ubay, is what Zaid said true?"
"No Messenger, by Allah and by the Qur'an which has been revealed to you, indeed Zaid is a liar. He's been lying."
Hearing the words of Ibn Ubay, the people who witnessed it then doubted Zaid bin Arqam.
Umar bin Khatab who was there at that time wanted to kill Ibn Ubay. He knew that Ibn Ubayy often did lies and slander. Unfortunately, the Apostle always prevented it.
Immediately, the verse of al-Munafiqun verses 1-8 came down. The Apostle read it in front of all the Muslims and whispered in the ear of Zaid bin Arqam and said:
"Your ears are right, young man, he is the one who lies."
