History of National Awakening and Islamic Awakening in Indonesia
The history of national awakening in Indonesia coincides with how Islam in Indonesia is also developing, one of which is the spirit of resistance
May 20 marked the beginning of a new history of the nationalist movement in the Dutch East Indies. This movement is marked by the emergence of community organizations both from religion, media, and social. Its emergence could not be separated from the influence of Dutch politics, which at that time applied an ethical political system for the Dutch East Indies. This was due to the gratitude given by the Dutch to the Dutch East Indies for helping the Dutch economy so far.
History has recorded that between 1900 and 1916 organizations in the Dutch East Indies began to emerge massively. Media Medan Priyayi, Budi Utomo's organization, the Islamic Trade Union which was changed to Syarikat Islam (SI) , and many more. It is proven by the formation of this organization capable of producing ideas that lead to the struggle to liberate the Dutch East Indies from colonialism, as well as giving birth to nationalist figures who have until now become our heroes, such as HOS Tjokroaminoto, Agus Salim, Tirto Adi Surjo, Ir. Soekarno, Tan Malaka, Bung Hatta, Ahmad Subardjo, and so on.
To commemorate the service of the struggle that has been carried out by our fighters, the effort we must do is to take the values contained in their struggle, especially those that have been taught by HOS Tjokroaminoto with his SI. SI in its journey wants to unite Muslims to fight the invaders. By using the term religion in collaboration with local traditions, it is hoped that it can win the sympathy of Muslims who will then be accommodated for the independence of the Indonesian nation.
The important points of the SI struggle that we can apply in the current era are; First , establish ukhuwah Islamiyah , unite our sense of brotherhood among Muslims. This is based on religious sentiment which aims to unite the people. Uniting the people does not mean equating or turning into one, but uniting in the sense that all Muslims who feel colonized, whatever their understanding of religion, are united to achieve independence.
In current developments, the unity of the people must be based on the awareness of the four pillars of nationality, namely Pancasila, the 1945 Constitution, Bhinneka Tunggal Ika, and the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia. In its development, the history of Indonesia's national awakening has also become the key to the people's struggle.
The sense of community unity also shows that differences in religious interpretations are not an obstacle. That difference is a grace that must be maintained for the continuation of a harmonious life. People will worship specifically and be able to carry out all the recommendations of religion when the life of the nation and state is harmonious, full of peace, and justice.
The second point of the spirit of SI is the unity and integrity of the nation or ukhuwah wathoniyah , establishing brotherhood among citizens of other countries of different religion, ethnicity, language, and ethnicity. When the sense of brotherhood of the people has been established based on the four pillars of nationality, then the next step is to establish brotherhood with others. This step is important because people living in Indonesia are not only Muslims but also neighbors with other religions, ethnicities and ethnicities.
Establishing brotherhood with others will lead us to justice and peace. The sense of unity between all groups will encourage people to work together to build the nation and state. A nation will be great if the sense of unity and brotherhood that is actualized in the form of mutual cooperation will be able to build an advanced nation's civilization. People who live in it will feel safe, fair, and prosperous.
Therefore, on May 20 we make it to see the history in which it contains various meanings, one of which is SI's desire to build this nation. Building unity and brotherhood of the Ummah is very important because Muslims are the largest in this country. This feeling is based on the four pillars of nationality so that we do not lose the spirit of state life. Building brotherhood with other groups is also an important step because with it we can work together to build the nation. The goal is to build a strong civilization in which people live to feel safe, prosperous, and peaceful. Allahu a'lam.
