Mecca Al Mukaromah became a place for Indonesians to seek knowledge. But not only that, several scholars have been imams at the Grand Mosque. It is the high level of knowledge and morals that makes them have a high position in the heart of the Muslims of this world.
In history it is stated that there are 3 Indonesians who have been Imams of the Grand Mosque, namely Sheikh Junaid Al Batawi, Imam Nawawi Al Bantani and Sheikh Ahmad Khtaib Al Minangkabawi. They are considered scholars who are role models and have many students. Not only that, these three scholars also inspired independence in the country.
Sheikh Junaid Al Batawi was born in Pekojan, West Jakarta. He is known as a strong educator. Until the end of his life was spent teaching. Sheikh Junaid is known as the Shaykhul Masyayikh of the Shafii madhhab. Among his students who later became famous was Iman Nawawi Al Bantani. Sheikh Junaid Al-Betawi died in Mecca in 1840. It is estimated that he was 100 years old. Thanks to his services, the name Betawi was introduced to foreign countries for the first time.
The second recorded person who became the Grand Imam of the Grand Mosque is Shaykh Muhammad Nawawi al-Jawi al-Bantani. Born in Kampung Tanara, Serang, Banten in 1815. His name is well-known until now with many works.

And the last one is Ahmad Khatib bin Abdul Latif al-Minangkabawi. This scholar was born in West Sumatra, in Koto Tuo – Agam, June 26, 1860. As a child, his intelligence was evident. He and his father Shaykh Abdul Latif took him to Mecca at the age of 11 (1871) to perform the Hajj. However, Ahmad did not go home and was in Mecca to complete his memorization of the Qur'an. As for his father, he returned to West Sumatra. In addition to memorizing the Qur'an, Ahmad studied with several scholars including Sayyid Bakri Syatha, Sayyid Ahmad bin Zaini Dahlan, and Sheikh Muhammad bin Sulaiman Hasbullah al-Makkiy.
Sheikh Ahmad Khatib's wisdom was proven when he was appointed as an imam and preacher as well as teaching staff at the Al Haram Mosque. This position of priest and preacher is not an arbitrary position. This position is only for people who have high knowledge. Sheikh Ahmad Khatib had many students and became great scholars, including Abdul Karim Amrullah (Haji Rasul) the father of Buya Hamka, KH Hasyim Asy'ari (founder of NU) and KH Ahmad Dahlan (founder of Muhammadiyah).
