Mambaul Ulum Legendary Madrasa


The city of Solo is not only known from the palace. But it is also known as one of the old Islamic education center. Mambaul Ulum Madrasah name. This madrasa is legendary for being a pioneer in the renewal of Islamic education in Indonesia.


Mambaul Ulum was founded on July 23, 1905 by R. Hadipati Sosro Diningrat and Raden Penghulu Tafsir Anom. The idea itself came from Pakubuwono IX. At first the education system adopted the pesantren. However, as development progressed, Mambaul Ulum turned into a classical system in class units. In this madrasa, not only religious knowledge is studied but also general sciences such as astronomy, arithmetic and so on.


This madrasa has a specificity when compared to other schools at that time. Mambaul Ulum has two goals. First, as an educational institution for prospective kepenghulu employees. Second, as a place of education for teacher cadres, preachers and Islamic movement workers. for that the class is specially made. Class VI for interns for religious officials in the village. Class IX for internship at the sub-district religious affairs office. Meanwhile, class XI is for internship as a headmaster in the district. The period of education lasts for 12 years. Madrasah Mambaul Ulum at that time could not be separated from the Jamsaren Islamic Boarding School. Because many Mambaul Ulum students concurrently study at the hut. KH Idris, the founder of the Jamsaren Islamic Boarding School, is also one of the managers of the Mambaul Ulum madrasa.


At first Mambaul Ulum was led by Kiai Arfah. In 1918, KH Muhammad Adnan succeeded him, after studying in Mecca. In 1919 it was KH Jumhur who led until 1946 and was replaced by KH A Jalil Zamakhsyari. In its heyday it had 700 students with 18 teachers. There are 10 old teachers or prophets and 8 young teachers or mudaris.


One of the successes of Mambaul Ulum is its students. Nearly 50 percent of the top officials in Java and Madura during the Japanese colonial era were Amambaul Ulum alumni. In fact, many figures from the Minister of Religion of the Republic of Indonesia, namely KH Masykur, KH Syaifuddin Zuhri and Dr. Munawir Syadzali, KH Syukri Ghazali, Ahmad Baiquni are graduates of the madrasa. Now the madrasah mambaul ulum has changed to Madrasah Aliyan Negeri 2 Surakarta.
