The Story of the Prophet Allowing Mass in the Mosque
The Story of the Prophet Allowing Mass in the Mosque
Understanding religion by only using the textual approach and the propositions in the Qur'an will foster a person to become radical and rigid. In fact, one of the requirements to be a moderate Muslim and characterized by peace is to understand religion with various approaches, one of which is a historical approach.
I do not underestimate the Koran as the primary source for Muslims, but it would be wonderful if we understand not only through the Koran. One of them is Sirah Nabawiyah. In the history of prophethood, there are many things in the daily life of the Prophet that often escape the eyes of his people. That he is a multiculturalist and tolerant.
As a compromise is the realization of the Medina Charter. A peace amendment between the tribes of Medina and the various religions. That with the Medina Charter, the Prophet, his companions and other people agreed to live in peace even though they had differences in belief.
We must continue to practice Islam as best we can, but we must have the awareness that the Islam that we understand and practice does not reduce the need to be able to live together in the midst of differences with others.
Ibn Qoyim in his Zadul Ma'ad quoted Ibn Hisham 's Sirah Nabawiyah . Once a messenger came from Najran to Medina to establish cooperation and a peace treaty with the Prophet. In the midst of the incident, there were several groups of Christians who were running out of time to worship Mass. Then, asked the Prophet Muhammad,
"O Muhammad, where is the place we can use for Mass?"
The Prophet replied, "If you want, please go to the mosque." The Companions then stood up, but the Prophet said, "Leave them alone."
Then Ibn Qoyim gave a note in his book about the incident, "But don't get used to it!"
It did not stop there, the Prophet's behavior was characterized by multiculturalism and tolerance. When Abdullah bin Ubay, a hypocrite and enemy of the Prophet in Medina died, his son came to the Prophet and informed him that his father was dead. For the sake of the peace of the family, the child asked the Prophet's robe to be used to shroud his father. Immediately, the Prophet took off the robe he was wearing and gave it to Abdullah bin Ubay's son.
This is evidence of the historical approach to the multiculturalist spirit and tolerance of the Prophet in a life that has differences. And this kind of historical approach will never be found in an nusus al maktubah fil Quraan.
As a final, quoting a message from Prof. Dr. KH. Qurais Sihab in his speech at the Tebuireng Islamic Boarding School on December 12, 2016, "We should respect everyone's opinion as long as it is characterized by peace." Wallahu a'alam bis sowab
