A Grandmother Who Speaks Fluently Using Verses of the Al-Qur'an

Among the stories contained in the book al-Mustathraf by Syihabuddin Muhammad is a story that tells about a woman who has eloquence and fluency in speaking using the verses of the Quran. In fact, he has never spoken for decades except by using verses from the Quran. Here is the story:

Abdullah bin Mubarak said that one day he intended to perform the Hajj to Baitullah and visit the tomb of the Prophet Muhammad SAW. In the middle of the journey he met an old woman wearing woolen cloth. I greeted him, "Assalamu alaiki warahmatullahi wabarakatuh". The grandmother replied, "( To them it was said): Greetings, as a greeting from the Most Merciful God" (QS 36: 58). Then I asked him, "May God love you, what are you doing in this place?" He replied, "Whoever is led astray by God, there is no one to guide him. (QS 7: 186)

In my heart I murmured that he had lost his way. I asked her, "Where are you going, grandma?" He replied, "Holy is the One who leads His servants at night from the Haram Mosque to the Aqsa Mosque (QS 17:1). I asked him, "Since when have you been here?" He replied, "For three nights in a healthy state" (QS 19:10) . I asked, "I don't see you bringing food that you can eat." He replied, "He gave me food and drink (QS 26: 79). I asked, "What do you perform ablution with?" He replied, "If you don't find water then pray with clean dust." (QS 4: 43)

I said to him, "I brought food. Do you want to eat?” He replied, "Then they complete the fast until night" (QS 2: 187). I said, "Isn't this the month of Ramadan?" He replied, "And whoever does a good deed with the will of the heart, then verily Allah is Most Gracious of good deeds and All-Knowing" (QS 2: 158). I said to him, "On the way we are allowed to break the fast". He replied, "And fasting is better if you all know." (QS 2: 184)

I asked him about the grandmother's speech, "Why don't you talk to me the way I talk to you?" He replied, "Not a single word he uttered but there is a nearby guardian angel who is always present." (Qur'an 50: 18) I asked, "What class are you from?" He replied, “Do not follow something that you do not know the knowledge of. Truly hearing, sight, and heart will all be held accountable." (Qur'an 17:36). I said, "I have done wrong, please forgive me." He replied, “Today there is no rebuke for you. May Allah forgive you."(QS 12: 92) I asked him, "Are you willing to ride my camel, so that you can meet your caravan/group?" He said, "And what you do in the form of good is known to God." (QS 2: 197)

Then Abdullah bin Mubarak lowered his camel so that the grandmother could ride it. Then the grandmother said, "Say to the believers, lower their gaze" (QS 24:30). I looked down from him and said to him, "Get up." As he was about to mount, the camel jumped until his clothes were torn. He said, "And the calamity that befell all of you is because of your efforts." (QS 42: 30). I said to him, "Be patient, until this camel will be strong." He said, "Then we have given understanding to Sulaiman about the (more accurate) law." (QS 21: 79) I tied the camel and said, "Get on!" Then when he mounted the camel, he said,"Glory be to God who has subdued all this for us, even though we were previously unable to master it. And indeed we will return to our Lord." (QS 43: 13-14)

After reaching a certain place, Abdullah said to him, "We have reached the domes. Which group are you from?" He replied, "Allah has made Ibrahim a lover." (QS 4: 125) And God spoke to Moses with the true word." (QS 4: 164), O Yahya, take the book (Torah) seriously. (QS 19: 12) . Then Abdullah called, "O Ibrahim, Musa, and Yahya."

Suddenly the young men appeared, as if they were facing the moon. When they had sat down, the grandmother said, "Then tell one of you to go to the city with this silver coin of yours, and let him see which one is better, then let him be gentle." (QS 18: 19). Then one of them went and bought food and then served it to me. The grandmother said, "It was said to them, Eat and drink well because of the good deeds you have done in the past days." (QS 69: 24)

I said, "I will not eat your food until you tell me about this woman." They said, “She is our mother who for 40 years ago did not speak, except for the verses of the Koran for fear of slipping and getting the wrath of Allah.
