Existence  Muhammadiyah and NU in Bung Karna's view

In a speech in front of participants celebrating the 50th anniversary of Muhammadiyah, 26 November 1962, Bung Karno told about his meeting with KH. Ahmad Dahlan. Bung Karno said:

"In that dim atmosphere, Kiai Ahmad Dahlan came to Surabaya and gave a tabligh about Islam. For me (speech) it contains regeneration and rejuvenation rather than Islam. Because, you know, even though my mother is a Muslim, she comes from another religion, (she) is Balinese. Father, even though he is a Muslim, he is a theosophical religion. So (parents) did not teach me about Islam."

The Tabligh enlightened Bung Karno. especially related to the understanding of Islam which is pro-poor (teokigi Al Ma'un) and the urge to do ijtihad. Also, since the age of 15 years, Bung Karno kintil wherever KH. Ahmad Dahlan held the Tabligh.

And, still in that speech, Bung Karno uttered legendary words among Muhammadiyah:

“Once Muhammadiyah, always Muhammadiyah. These words are not only for Muhammadiyah, but also for me. I hope that when I read again the names of Muhammadiyah members, of which there are 175,000 people, my name will still be listed in it. I hope my name will not be crossed out from the Muhammadiyah membership list.”

The link between Bung Karno and Muhammadiyah became even closer when Bung Karno became an administrator of the Bengkulu Muhammadiyah and even married Fatmawati, the daughter of a Bengkulu Muhammadiyah figure.

However, Bung Karno did not only have a close relationship with Muhammadiyah, he also built an intense relationship with NU kyais. In fact, Bung Karno admitted that he really loved NU.

In the 23rd NU congress, December 28, 1962, Bung Karno made a speech:

"I really love NU. I am very worried if someone says that he doesn't love NU. Even if I have to crawl, I will still come to thismukamar, so people won't doubt my love for NU!”

Bung Karno's love for NU is not excessive. During the struggle for independence and during the defense of independence, the alliance between Bung Karno and NU was very close. In the political field, for example, the alliance between Bung Karno and NU is recorded in NASAKOM, which stands for Nationalist (PNI), Religion (NU) and Communist (PKI).

When Muhammadiyah leaned more towards Masyumi, choosing to take another path, NU followed Bung Karno's path. At that time, even though he was at odds with Muhammadiyah, Bung Karno still asked that his name not be dropped from Muhammadiyah membership.

In a speech at the 23rd NU congress, Bung Karno narrated one of the roles of NU figures:

“Both in terms of religion, nationalism, and socialism. NU provided the greatest possible assistance. In fact, yes it's true, this is what Mr. Wahab said to me when at the DPA it was discussed whether or not to negotiate with the Netherlands regarding West Irian, he said: don't do rivet politics. On the advice of a DPA member named Kiai Wahab Hasbullah, we ran Trikora and it was successful, brothers and sisters."

In that speech, Bung Karno emphasized that NU was the reinforcer of the alliance between religion, nationalism and socialism.

In the lap of Muhammadiyah, Bung Karno found Islam. Also, Bung Karno once joked: "I am not a santri but a true Muslim.

In the arms of the NU clerics, Bung Karno found shelter and loyal friends in the struggle for and defended independence. NU, especially the Kyai, was a source of inspiration when Bung Karno needed advice.

Bung Karno is a member of Muhammadiyah who is also a member of Nahdiyyin. He is not a santri but close to the kyai.
