When Sayyidina Umar was greeted by a woman
When Sayyidina Umar was greeted by a woman
The best human according to the consensus of the mu'tabar scholars after the Prophets and after Abu Bakr Ash Shiddiq is Umar bin Al Khathab; one of the companions of the Prophet who has the capacity as a mujtahid once gave a speech from the pulpit. After praising his Lord, he said.
" Remember….!!"
Do not ever exceed the limit [excessive] in giving dowry (dowry). Because we [the companions of the Prophet] have never heard from other companions that they gave more dowry than the dowry that the Prophet gave to his wife. If you are excessive, then I will withdraw the excess from the unreasonable dowry for the Baitul Mal - for the public good.
A moment later he came down. The caliph's directives are short, solid and straightforward. But not long ago a woman came from Quraysh.
"O Leader of the Believers. Is it the Book of Allah that we have more right to follow or is it your words?” Spontaneously he replied, "Of course the Koran is more deserving of being followed."
" What do you mean?"
"You have just forbidden to give more dowry than the Prophet's dowry. Yet Allah Taala says:
وءاتيتم إحداهن قنطارا فلا تأخذوا منه شيئا {٢٠} سورة النساء
"And you have given one of the women a LOT OF TREASURE as a dowry………."On the advice or even one could say the objection of a woman, Sayyidina Umar, who at that time was the caliph, did not feel awkward, not ashamed, not proud to accept it, even Sayyidina Umar said:
كل أحد أفقه من عمر
"Everyone understands religion better than Umar."
The words uttered by Umar were repeated two or three times.
He returned to the pulpit.
“Ladies and gentlemen, I have forbidden you to give more dowry than the dowry of the Prophet. Please know that I retract my statement. And now do what is good for you. I do not limit. As long as it doesn't conflict with the Shari'a."
The attitude shown by Sayyidina Umar shows that he is a leader who adheres to the truth. He is without hesitation and shame in accepting other people's opinions in public.
أحق الناس أن يتبع من علم الحق وعمل به
(The most deserving of following are those who know and practice the truth)
