Habits of the Iftar Menu of the Prophet's Favorite
Among the practices that are sunnah during fasting are hastening to break the fast. The recommendation to break the fast is a form of ease and balance for the Islamic religion. This is in accordance with the character of Islam which does not like excessive religion. Islam has given signs in worship. The purpose of making these signs is for humans to worship according to their abilities. Because God is the creator of humans, He automatically knows what is appropriate for His creation.
In addition to hastening breaking the fast, the Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him, also recommends consuming a certain menu at the time of breaking the fast. In a hadith narrated by at-Tirmidhi it is said:
If one of you breaks his fast, let him break his fast with dates, and if he does not find dates, then let him break his fast with water, for it is a purification.
When you want to break the fast, break the fast with dates. If there is none, drink white water because it is holy. (HR: al-Tirmidhi)
There are two iftar menus recommended by Prophet Muhammad SAW, namely dates and white water. These two menus are also common for him to consume at the time of breaking the fast. In Mir'atul Mafatih , al-Mubarakfuri explains that dates are very good to consume when breaking the fast. It includes staple foods that can strengthen the body, especially refresh the eyes, after a day of fasting. Similarly with white water, it is pure and clean, and it is very good to consume it before tasting other iftar menu.
Al-Mubarakfuri's explanation is in line with modern health research. After being investigated, the substance most needed by the body during fasting is glucose. Among the foods that contain this substance are dates. Hence, dates are very well consumed when breaking the fast. If there are no dates, consume other foods that also contain glucose or simply start by drinking a glass of water. Wallahu a'lam
